"Dog Food Poison"
Poisons and Toxins in Dog Food

Any good dog owner takes good care of their pets and they are careful about what they feed their dog, even if they do lean towards commercial dog food. However, every pet owner is guilty of feeding their dog off the dinner table at least once in a while. But what are you really feeding your dog when you do this? There are dangerous foods that people eat all the time that should never be eaten by your dog-they are poison to your dog because he cannot digest it properly.

If you really want to feed your dog the occasional table treat, you should be aware of what not to feed him. Read on for a list of things to steer clear of and why.

Acidic Food

Foods that are high in acids are dangerous for you dog because they can damage the GI track of your pet. While this will not kill your pet (unless you feed your dog acidy foods daily), you will have to deal with some nasty and disgusting side effects such as vomiting, panting, fever and restlessness, among others. None of these things are fun for you or your pet.

Grapes/Raisins

Just don’t. Kidney failure has been documented in dogs that eat grapes or raisins.

Onions

Another don’t. Onions have an adverse effect on the red blood cell balance in your dog’s body and so onions should be considered extremely poisonous.

Coffee

As with humans, coffee elevates your dog’s heart rate. Unlike humans, your dog’s heart rate is already high, so this leads to seizures and GI track problems.

Ibuprofen

Dogs may love the smell of it, but it is poison to them. Lock away all of your ibuprofen and make sure they cannot get at it. You may have to be very clever-dogs have a way of getting into things even when it seems like they shouldn’t have.

Chocolate

Poison, poison, poison. Chocolate also elevates a dog’s heart rate and so can cause seizures.

Rat Poison

Keep your animal away from rat poison. Remember, you put it down to kill animals and dogs will be poisoned and killed from it as surely as rats. Rat poison is the number one source of canine poisoning in the world, mostly because of the lack of vigilance on the part of the owner.

The bottom line though is to feed your dog its food and leave the human foods to the humans. Dog food is created for dogs-it has all the nutrients your pet needs and is made to be digested properly. If you have any questions about what to feed your pet, ask your vet and then follow what he or she says. You may think that the occasional treat won’t hurt anything, but you should never take that chance. You can poison your pet with even an occasional treat-literally hurting or even killing your pet with kindness.
